Franz Kettler, who live in the middle of the black forest in Germany in a village called Triberg hand crafted the first design. He had intricately hand carved the clock and also the cuckoo bird. The cuckoo bird would do its thing at the top of every hour with chimes, pendulums, and weights.

The clock is usually finished in Walnut with small painted flowers. The larger version is typically designed to be a eight day clock which only has to be wound once a week.
